Braun Centrifugal Juicer
A Redesign Exercise
This semester’s challenge was to redesign a small motorized kitchen appliance. We also had to adhere to a couple of items. First, we had to justify our device selection. Second, consider a redesign language that would suit the new device. And third to create marketing material to present the redesign.
My approach was to select a device found in the local thrift shops. These devices end up here for a significant reason; assuming they are still functioning, the user did not deem it of value any longer. For the second point, I selected a classic kitchen appliance brand I admire, Braun. I also used their marketing campaigns (with a modern twist) to showcase my redesign. Finally, I completed user interviews, a task analysis, and a product appearance benchmark for similar devices as part of my research.
Juicer Machine is a centrifugal juicer redesign improving Jack Lalanne’s Power Juicer’s user benefits, aesthetics, and material use. The User Benefits enhance cable management, device translation, and juice production. At the same time, the FlexClamp creates a unified, streamlined silhouette giving a pleasing aesthetic. The project also reduces material use by decreasing device height, eliminating the pulp catcher, and utilizing the volume around the motor housing.
